Asimple and efficientmicrowave assisted digestion (MAD) combinedwith alumina-coatedmagnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) preconcentrationmethod followedbyelectrothermal atomic adsorptionspectrometry (ET-AAS), was developed for trace determination of palladium(II) (Pd+2) in road dust samples. In the proposed approach, Pd+2 after chelate formationwith 1-(2-pyridilazo)-2-naphthol (PAN),was quantitatively extracted to the surface ofAl2O3-coated Fe3O4MNPs. Then, elution of the preconcentratedmetal fromthe surface of the Al2O3-coated Fe3O4 MNPs was performed prior to its determination byET-AAS.The effects of pH, PAN concentration, SDS and Fe3O4 MNPs amounts and interfering ions on the recoveryof the analytewere investigated.Under optimized condi- tions, the calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.5-100 µg L-1with regression coefficient corresponding to 0.998. The values of the detection limit (based on 3Sb) and relative standard deviations (RSDs, for 10.0 µg L-1 of the analyte)were 0.045 µg L-1 and below than 3.9%(n = 10). The accuracy of themethod was tested by the recoveryexperiments on spiked real samples, withresults rangingfrom96to 105%.Finally, themethodwas successfullyapplied for determination of Pd+2 in several road dust samples and satisfactory resultswere obtained.
