Thermodynamic Models for Determination of Solubility of Cellulose Acetate in Various Solvents at Different Temperatures

S Baluja, Elham Abdullah Mo Alnayab and Asmita Hirapara

The solubility of cellulose acetate in water, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, tetrahydrofuran, ethyl acetate, 1,4-dioxane and N, N- dimethyl formamide was measured by gravimetric method over a temperature range (293.15 to 323.15) K at atmospheric pressure. The solubility is found to increase nonlinearly with temperature in most of the studied solvents. In alcohols and water, solubility is less than other non protic solvents. The solubility data were correlated with temperature by modified Apelblat and Buchowski-Ksiazczak (λh) equations. To understand the dissolution process, some thermodynamic parameters such as dissolution enthalpy, Gibb’s free energy, and entropy of mixing have also been calculated by Van’t Hoff analysis. The evaluated thermodynamic parameters are interpreted in terms of dominating driving force for dissolution process.
