Synthesis, spectral, thermal, powder x-ray diffraction and antimicrobial activity studies of some transition metal(II) complexes with schiff base derived from 3-chloro-N-[(1E)-(3-methoxy phenyl)methylene]-1-benzothiophene-2-carbohydrazide

Aseries of newcoordination complexes ofCo(II),Ni(II),Cu(II), Zn(II),Cd(II) andHg(II)with the Schiff base 3-chloro-Nï‚¢-[(1E)-(3-methoxyphenyl)methylene]- 1-benzothiophene-2-carbohydrazide have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, electrical conductance, electronic spectra, ESR, XRD, IR, FAB-MASS, TGA, 1HNMR andmagnetic susceptibilitymeasurements. The Schiff base behaves as bidentate ON donor ligand and forms the complexes of the types ML2.(H2O)n (Metal-Ligand ratio) stoichiometry and are non electrolytic in nature. It is found that, Co(II),Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes exhibit octahedral geometry. The ligand and its complexes have been tested for their antimicrobial activity.
