Synthesis of 2-Arylidene-4-(substituted Aryl) but-3-en-4-olides and Evaluation of Their Antibacterial and Anti-Inflammatory Activities

Ten new 2-arylidene-4-(substituted aryl)but-3-en-4-olides have been synthesized by condensing 0-(4-substituted benzoyl)propionic acid with appropriate aromatic aldehydes in presence of triethylamine (TEA). The compounds have been evaluated for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. Their structures were established on the basis of elemental analysis, 1H NMR and mass spectral data. Some of the compounds were found to have significant activity.
