Three novel complexes of type [ML2(H2O)2]whereM=Co(II),Ni(II) andCu(II) and L is new Schiff base ligand 2-N-(1ÂÂÂ’,2ÂÂÂ’-diphenylethanone oxime) benzoic acid obtained by condensationof -benzoin oxime and2-amino benzoic acid. The ligand andmetal complexeswere characterized by elemental analysis,UV-visible, IR, 1HNMR spectroscopy, thermal studies andmagnetic susceptibilitymeasurement. TheUV-visible andmagneticmoment data INTRODUCTION Recentlythere is growing interest in the coordinationchemistryofoximeswithtransitionmetals[ 1-5]which stems fromtheir utilization in awide range of applications. The oximes areused as analytical reagents[6,7] and their complexes asmodels for biological systems[8,9]. -benzoin oxime complex ofCu(II) is used in industry for formation of non-silver photographic images[10]. Oximes and dioximes have been used as reagent in gravimetric analysis and solvent extraction processes because of their abilityto formstable complexeswhich are sparinglysoluble inwater.Oximes arewidely recognized as versatile ligands that can be bound in different ways by ‘OÂÂÂ’ and or ‘NÂÂÂ’ atoms[11,12]. Oximes are known to be chelating ligands, frequently used in extractive and analytical chemistry.-Benzoin oxime is a well known analytical extracting agent forMolybdenum[ 13],Tungsten[14] andVanadium[15]. There is enormous interest presently in the field of coordination chemistryof transitionmetalswith Schiff bases.Oximes have also been used as biologicalmodrevealed octahedral environment aroundCo(II),Ni(II) andCu(II) ions.Theligandandmetal(II)complexeswere also screenedfor their antimicrobial activityagainstmicroorganisms Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal activityagainst the fungi Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger.
