Spectrophotometric assay of lead in water samples

K.Saraswathi, Ch.Bhargavi

A simple and rapid spectrophotometric method is developed for the determination of lead as Pb-(M.D.T.C ) complex in the presence of sodium acetate- acetic acid mediumat pH = 4.4 and 0.2MMgSO4 as salting out agent. As this complex is having absorption inU.Vregion, lead is estimated through copper as Cu-(M.D.T.C) complex. This complex shows absorption in visible region at 430nm. The method is sensitive up to 0.2ppm and it is free from interference of many metal ions like Al+3,Co+2,Zn+2,Ni+2,Fe+2.Among various anions oxalate, Thiocyanate, iodide & chloride do not interfere up to 100 folds. The developed method is applied for the determination of Pb (II) in various water samples.
