K.Byrappa, C.P.Sajan, B.V.Suresh Kumar, C.Ranganathaiah

Soil characteristics around Nanjangud have been studied in detail. The rocks in this terrain are made up of hornblende-granulites, garnet-pyroxene, fuchsite quartzite and calc-silicates. The soil samples collected from the area adjacent to the distillery unit were subjected to a systematic characterization using XRD, XRF, thin section study, and positron annihilation spectroscopic test. The soil properties such as pH, electrical conductivity, and availability of Ca, Mg, N, P, K and organic carbon have been measured. It was found that the effect of industrial effluent is much faster than the effect of geological process in this area.
