The electronic absorption, excitation and emission spectra together with the fluorescence and photochemical quantum yields of 1,4-bis-[trans-2- (1-hexadecyl-pyridinium-4-yl-vinyl] benzene diiodide (HPVB) have been studied in different solvents and miceller media. Both absorption and emission maxima are less sensitive to medium polarity. (HPVB) shows low fluorescence and high photochemical quantum yields. The emission intensity increases as the concentration of micelles (SDS and CTAB) increases with large red shift in SDS micelle. The dye undergoes ground state molecular aggregation in DMSO at concentration ca. 2×10-5 mol dm-3.
