New polymer bonded drugs (PBDs) with a mixture of nano or microparticles of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) salt and two anti-inflammatory model drugs 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and salicylic acid (SA) were studied as drug delivery systems. These nano PBDs were prepared by freeze drying method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and FT-IR. Studies of drug release were carried out in enzyme-free simulated gastric and intestinal fluids (SGF and SIF, respectively). The drug-release profiles indicated that the amount of drug released depended on the particle size of PBDs.
