Jinky Leilanie DP Lu

This study looked into occupational and environmental health and safety conditions in small scale mining in the Philippines. Survey questionnaires were given to 124 respondents, and 15 were key interviewees on mining hazards and safety compliance.Aworkplace inspection was done to assess the working conditions, work hazards, environmental waste management, and work practices of the miners. 49% reported being sick in the last 12 months because of work exposure. The workplace inspection of the underground tunnels and pits was not complaint to the standard requirements for mining safety. The study suggests that there is a need for an environmental agenda which addresses both the technical and social issues of mining in the area.
